Avery- general info
A 24 year old In-Birth from New York. Apparently, they have a brother named Vale. Shy, awkward in-person, and doesn't seem to have any plans for the future.
Life has never been of much interest to them, until fairly recently. Having met Kuon, their world has been looking a lot brighter, albeit with some new complications thanks to said Aeon.
Seemingly, they can only remember the past four or five years in detail- from a short time prior to them becoming an In-Birth up until now.
What they remember of their childhood is a vague blur, mostly of an unknown place filled with unknown people.
Their actual origin is quite the mystery, and they've been living alone off of money sent from their older brother for as long as they can remember. He hasn't visited in a while now.
“"Nostalgia", like a yearning ache for happier times. The song you heard in a dream, the view that spreads out across a dreamscape, reaching every corner of the world. The distant aftertaste of pain from choked down words and stifled cries. The things you remember from long ago, haunting your being and breathing down your neck. Deja vu. You're lost in endless vertigo.
You can't go back. You can never go back. Time only moves forward.
"Don't you miss when life was simple?" "Isn't it scary to grow up?"
That feeling, overflowing in your soul.... Reach for it, embrace it.”
“They fixate. On death, on the end. Time passes in a blink, then grinds to a stop. They fixate once more, on him. He who places an embargo upon the final day of their life, replaced with an endless cycle. Sentenced to serve eons, they sigh. And write yet another “eternity” into a daydream.”

Battle related info
EXS:EXS of Thalassa: Riptide— control of water down to the molecular level, and up to vast quantities. They’re rather proficient with it, through much trial and error.
Kuon has described seeing Avery use it as "beautiful".
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘Weapon:Esmius— As it always does, Esmius takes on characteristics dependent on who calls upon it. The version that reacts to Avery's soul allows for utilization of water for energy as well as flame. Main colors are crystal and blue.Weapon Description:Vaeriu's shining and star-studded bow. Arrows are summoned as needed in one's hand and are a weapon of their own. At close distances, the arrows can shorten and be used as knives. It holds a number of things, carries them with every shot. Wishes and prayers. Desires. The cry of a girl who couldn't stand to be hated; she could pretend to be liked instead.
She walks into a room and everyone looks- the paranoia says it's mockery, and her heart wishes it means that she's wanted.

Override Key functions:Key Name: Limerence
Ability type: Either | Trigger
Description: They are capable of establishing a soul link between themself and a singular object of their affections. Essentially, it allows them to "share" everything with That Person™— energy, health, sensation, emotion, thoughts, time, place, abilities, memory, dreams, desires, strength, etc.Example(s):
- Using their partner's powers/ability
- Teleporting to the location of their partner
- Taking damage for their partner
- Bringing a past version of their partner to the present or going to a past version of their partner themselves
- Sharing energy reserves/EXS
- Wielding their partner's weapon (if unique to said partner)
- Sharing memoriesNotes:- The majority of their power, specifically that which is tied to their Lastoran heritage, has been sealed for now, and they aren't aware said power exists. Said seal will break in a pinch, immediately activating Override.- Absolute mastery would allow Avery to access the higher power effects of this ability.
It's highly unlikely that Avery will achieve that level of skill within the current Universe, given that their Override Key isn't their main ability, and their lack of knowledge that it exists. If they do manage to master their Override Key, it would potentially be centuries and many mishaps in the future. (Hey! They've got plenty of time……)As of right now, Avery has managed to activate their Override Key three different times, all unintentionally.
Key definiton:
“To be the closest that a pair can possibly be without becoming only one... I'll hold you so close that no one else will ever reach you again. So you can never be with someone else. I'll contaminate your being and irradiate your soul, rotten to the core, wanted only by me. Forcing my obsession into your mouth, hoping that you’ll suffocate…
Hey, tell me, what does my fixation taste like?”
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘Override Form:Form Name: Alovulpis
Inspo?: Common thresher shark
Unbind Variant: Limerence Invidia
Unbind Definition: Override version of the Limerence ability. Allows Avery Alovulpis to fixate on any one being.
Function: Steal the abilities/skills/powers of their “fixation”. Power of stolen abilities is initially much weaker than the original, and gains power through use and damage taken. Stolen abilities are sealed and can't be used by the original wielder.Override Form Description:
“You're chewing on the inside of your cheek with too sharp teeth, a gnawing hunger in your very bones... What is it that you want? What is it that you need?
Are you hunting? The scent of blood leads you to someone better than you could ever be. Focusing unfit and blurry eyes on that which you desire, your jaw clamps down on dissatisfaction. "Never let go."; it echoes in your soul. Pay no mind to the tearing of your gums, spit out the incisors wrenched free by fruitless struggles to tear off a bite; disappointment tastes of iron…
Your inadequate self– hold it close, let it fester, become consumed by eternal pain.”
History/backstory
(note: needs a rewrite at some point)
Between 2 and 3 years prior, a 22 year old Avery, tired of life and having dropped out of college for the third time, attempts to have theirs ended at the hands of a Void. Despite seemingly grievous injuries, they came around several hours later (much to their initial dismay).
Having new powers is a good enough reason to stick around, right? None of it could make any meaningful improvements to their life, really… An EXS doesn't change anything about their situation, but that's no reason not to try it out and have some fun with it, right? See how powerful they could get? Be like those “magical girls” and “espers” or whatever in whatever anime it was they last watched.
Life can't possibly get any better than that. So it doesn't— it goes downhill from there. Running around once a month slaying monsters like a game character makes the downtime between Nights excruciating. After a few years, even the Nights themselves felt boring. And that was approximately when they started hearing whispers about some “Aeon”.“Re-Birth” “destroying the world” “evil” “must be stopped”. Large organizations sending their absolute best. Various unaffiliated In-Births taking flights over. Everyone aiming to kill this one specific guy.
And Avery, thinking "if I'm going to die, maybe I should do it trying to "protect the world" or something stupid like that. Maybe I'll finally make someone proud.”, purchases a one-way ticket to Japan, and packs their things. Nothing more than what's absolutely necessary to survive in the days leading up to that “Final Night”, as people were calling it. Normally, they'd be concerned regarding a “Final” anything, because then they'd really have nothing to live for. But it doesn't matter. They're not coming back from this. And on the night that this big bad awful scary Aeon who's so powerful and evil and intimidating is meant to be destroying the world, Avery sets out like so many others to find him and fight him. Or rather, to find him, and at least die in a way that wouldn't cause any guilt for the few people that care about them.
The fact that they make it there before anyone else does can only have been fate itself, although they almost don't realize it at first. Seeing this… Notably small, underdressed, rather pathetic looking man floating there makes them wonder if that's actually the right guy. Conversely, Kuon is wondering why this stranger affiliated with no specific organization or group is out here at all. There isn't even a hint of malice in those blue eyes. There's no way that this person is here to fight him or kill him.To his surprise, they call forth a weapon anyway. And so they fight.
The first thing they notice is that he's distracted by something. He's paying too much attention to them, and not enough attention to what it is they're doing. It's odd, for someone supposedly determined to end the world. Is that not really what he wants? If the guy doesn't even actually want to destroy the world, that's fucking embarrassing. So losing to him would be fucking embarrassing. In the very least, they need to get out of here (although apparently the “Aeon Guy” isn't quite what he was made out to be.) And to Kuon, it's immediately obvious that they're only defending, not attacking. They aren't here to win. So what is it they want out of this?
Kuon, not planning on fighting any further, finally asks “What are you even doing here? You're clearly not trying to kill me.”
At this point, Avery doesn't see any reason not to tell him. There are worse people to vent to than the guy supposedly looking to end the world. Probably. So Avery tells him. That they're honestly just here to die, have no intentions of going home, and were planning to throw the match, up until realizing that he's…. Not cool enough to be worth just dying to. They wanted it to be sent back home that they died trying to do something. For people to be happy that they put effort into something. That as pointless as everything has been, as their whole life has been, at least they went out with a bang.
That whether they're here or not, the world might end tonight. And that it doesn't matter to them either way, because they don't want to be here for it."A horrible world like this shouldn't exist in the first place. I don't care if you destroy it. No one cares about anyone. There's nothing worth saving."
"It doesn't even feel like that's what you're trying to do anyway.”And it's true. That's not what any of this is about. Kuon starts talking about untold stories from however long ago. And despite having lost interest in just about everything, they listen attentively. Something they're not especially good at. And as ridiculous as this man is, Avery listens to him.
There's enough of who Kuon used to be left in there for him to admit that part of this is just that he doesn't have a reason not to end the world.Neither of them have a reason to keep "living". Neither of them have a reason to want to be here.
Everything hurts. Everything sucks. Why are they even here?Alone. And yet, not alone any longer. A certain reflection of oneself in someone else…
It's selfish, he knows it's selfish, but he doesn't truly want to be alone in the ruins of the world.
It's selfish, they know it's selfish, but they don't want to have to keep fighting through life on their own.And something just. Clicks. Like it was always meant to be. Like this is what centuries were leading up to for Kuon, and a mere 2 decades and 4 years for Avery. That they were both supposed to be here tonight, meeting despite how astronomically small the chances of it happening were. The allure of being each other's reasons to go on claims them both.Avery thinks of how they've never said "I'm glad I'm alive. I want to keep living". That they can't remember a single instance where they could truly say that. But, in this moment, there's a warmth in their soul that they've never felt before. Kuon thinks about the centuries it's been since he truly cared about anyone. Wanted someone to be by his side. It's good enough. They're not sure what the exact relationship between the two of them is, but it's good enough. They'll live for each other.
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘More info:
(Events in chronological order)- As of late, the two of them are renting an apartment via a large amount of help from Avery's brother, and paying rent by selling assorted “worthless junk” that Kuon has collected over the centuries. Apparently, things like spoons from 400 years ago are highly valuable.- Avery is in the process of “domesticating” Kuon, ie: introducing him to a society that they don't even function or live in themself for the most part.
- Around the same time, the weird “mutually codependent situationship” thing turns into “severely mutually codependent whirlwind romance that just keeps getting worse”.
Kuon doesn't have friends, Avery is in a foreign country and also doesn't have friends. This train is going off the rails and there isn't even a conductor anywhere onboard. Folie a deux. Kuon has only one reason not to end the world, and Avery has only one reason not to end their own world. Passively homocidal x passively suicidal.- Honestly the two of them are just going around having a great time. Even if it's toxic and they're quite literally becoming the definition of “us against the world”. Here we have two unsupervised man children with no responsibilities running around unchecked.
- Kuon is pretty sure he's never enjoyed being alive this much in his 520 years of living and decides he absolutely cannot lose this, no matter what. And yet, he's immortal, and they are not. There's nothing that can really be done about it.
Or can there?- Following a fairly large stretch of time preparing, Kuon does, in fact, succeed in retrieving Linne's power of sealing in order to transfer it to Avery.
- Only recently has Avery discovered the power that has been transferred to them. They're still not entirely sure what to make of it, but if it's a promise from Kuon that he'll never leave, then they're okay with it. For now.
